W.C. Handy award winning blues man Louisiana Red passed in away in Germany on February 25, 2012 at age 79. Born Iverson Minter he came to Pittsburgh to live with his grandmother after both of his parents died. His grandfather gave him the nickname Louisiana Red because of his fondness for hot sauce. Louisiana Red, who recorded 50 albums and is known by blues fans around the world, learned blues guitar in Pittsburgh from Crit Walters and Mr. Cash. He played blues on the streets of Pittsburgh before radio DJ Bill Powell helped him record a demo tape that won Red a recording session with Chess records playing with members of Muddy Waters band.

Read about the Hill District church that was once a theater promoted as the "Palace of Pleasure". Part of T.O.B.A. circuit in the 1920s it presented 1920s shows by Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith, and Butterbeans and Susie. Converted into a large "Swanky" dance hall in 1933 it hosted Duke Ellington, Chick Webb, Fletcher Henderson, Ella and many more of the great 1930s swing bands. The Vern Stern Orchestra broadcast a daily live show on WWSW from the ballroom. On the opening of the ballroom in December of 1933 the Pittsburgh Courier called it "a thing of beauty and a joy forever". It closed in 1940 but the building still stands.
Honoring the Incredibly talented Sophisticated Lady Phyllis Hymantag:jazzburgher.ning.com,2012-02-07:1992552:BlogPost:2472012012-02-07T01:43:32.000ZPaul Carosihttp://jazzburgher.ning.com/profile/PaulCarosi
