Williams was a highly respected musician in her day whose repertoire spanned several seminal jazz styles, from boogie-woogie to bebop, and she was an integral member of what became known as the Kansas…

From Kansas City in the twenties to New York in the forties and beyond, pianist, arranger and composer Mary Lou Williams made direct contributions to nearly every major development of jazz in her lifetime, but rarely received the recognition she deserved. A devout Roman Catholic, she composed long-form orchestral and religious works, taught at Duke University and helped found the…Continue

Oh friends.... what a fascinating, tumultuous and looooong winter it has been.... I'm happy to say I finally believe we may have actually reached the other side. The warm winds blow with the sweet tantalizing promise of beautiful music, graceful dancers and hilarious escapades. I don't trust the wind to deliver these things all by itself, so I have committed myself to helping make them reality.…

Dear Pittsburgh Jazz Society Members,
Unfortunately, it is true that the Pittsburgh Jazz Society will no longer be presenting jazz on Sunday night at James Street Gastropub & Speakeasy. James Street Gastropub & Speakeasy has been in business for slightly over one year. As a brand new…Continue

Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks to all of you who were able to attend our Special Edition of Monday Night Jazz @ Savoy, featuring the exciting new group, "Elevations"! These five young jazz lions were a smash hit, the joint was jumpin' and it was packed (in spite of the rain). It's not surprising that they are beginning to take the jazz world by storm, what with mentors the likes of Roger Humphries, Dwayne Dolphin and Sean Jones, how could they not! And Savoy was happy to be among the first…Continue
Who were these veritable gentlemen who in the early 1950's promoted jazz gigs with artists like Charlie Parker at venues such as the Syria Mosque?
Please note that the title for the posting about Monday Night Jazz @ Savoy for November 12, 2012 mistakenly refered to Maureen Budway as the featured artist for that date. In fact, Maureen performed at Savoy this past week on November 5, 2012. As correctly stated in the body of the post, the featured artist for November 12th is the wonderful songstress, JUDI FIGEL. Please note this correction on your calendar and come join us at Savoy for a great night of music…Continue
