PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

SUPPORTING OUR MUSIC

About an hour ago I opened up this week's issue of the Soul Patrol Times. Hopefully many of you subscribe to it. Around that same time I also went to get my mail out of the mailbox. I had made contact with Sonny Fortune last week and he had sent me his CD so I can play it on the air.

When I came back upstairs I noticed that Bob had did something that he usually does not do without good reason...he posted a YouTube video of young Black musicians. Not…

JAZZ - COMPLACIENCY VS CONSISTANCY (THE PITTSBURGH JAZZ FAN APPRECIATION EVENT) The following article by Kevin Amos is truly right on time.

THE PASSING OF RICHARD VITALIE

As I sit here in the early hours of the morning I still can't get over the passing of my close friend and bandmate Richard "Dick" Vitalie. Yes folks I am a musician as well but I don't sit in as a vocalist or percussionist with folks here for many reasons. Lack of talent is definately not one of them. His going home service is today.

I was a member of Stick Against Stone back in the early 80's while I took a short leave from WYEP. I was…

Are Artists Doing ALL They Can To Help PROMOTE THEIR GIGS ?

While it is the job of the person organizing the event to promote, promote, promote I wonder if the actual participants (the musicians) do all they can to help their cause.

Do folks help spread the word through their personal network, tell friend or fans where the next gig is and how they can support. the venue and promoter by doing this?

Is it just the job of the promoter to get the word out? Should this be a colaboration with the artist? If folks don't promote their… Continue

Eight Million YouTube Views and a Sonny Rollins iPhone App

Bret Primack is pleased to report that his YouTube Jazz Video Guy channel has passed eight million views and that he’s just released a Sonny Rollins iPhone App. On the cutting edge of technology and music since he co-founded Jazz Central Station the first major Jazz website in 1994, Bret is an advocate for utilizing new media as marketing and distribution tool for Jazz. “To reach new listeners," Bret believes, "and… Continue

Kevin Amos speaks out on "Black Radio" in Pittsburgh

Folks ...I have am involved in print, broadcast and new media so I think I know a little bit. My radio involvement spans over 30 years. It does't make any difference where I have worked. I know the industry and how things work.

I have never been a favorite of the so-called Black media mainstream in case some of you really want to know or the White media either.

For a few months now people have been asking me what the solution should be in replacing WAMO as a so-called Black… Continue

Is Jazz Dying?

By TERRY TEACHOUT

New York

In 1987, Congress passed a joint resolution declaring jazz to be “a rare and valuable national treasure.” Nowadays the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis is taught in public schools, heard on TV commercials and performed at prestigious venues such as New York’s Lincoln Center, which even runs its own nightclub, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

What is going to be done about the not-Jazz/ junk/spam/non-music related context on this network?

The Pittsburgh Jazz Network continues to be flooded with folks who are not talking about Jazz at all and have no interest in it. Only here to promote their business ventures. This goes for a few more of you. Why???

They instead flood us with tourist ads and religious views. Why is that Nelson? Can't you block that out?
