PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

Thank you for those who have donated! Really means so much! We are close to being at the half way mark! Please feel free to share among friends. I know my dad knew so many people and I'd like to reach as many as I can! Thank you!

Francis Bruce Marion, my dad, made the final transition to the other side yesterday. He left this world, May 23rd suddenly and unexpectedly. He will be deeply missed, loved and remembered by so many!

He made his mark in this life of a person who gave without hesitation or asking of anything in return.  He lived to help and heal others. He carried a pure heart of gold and his caring nature  was something he couldn't hide! It gave him wonderful joy to provide for others.

His love of Jazz was also known throughout Pittsburgh! He took great pleasure in taping shows of his jazz buddies and always had a camera to capture great musical moments in life! He gave copies of the recordings out without ever asking for anything in return.

He was a loving partner, brother, uncle, father and grandfather. His love was known throughout his family and friends as pure, honest and genuine. His jovial personality made him a friend to everyone he met! He was a kind soul who loved and enjoyed life!

He had the hands of a healer and was a Chiropractor for many years. He graduated from Life Chiropractic College in 1980 and practiced in Georgia until his retirement in 1985. His healing hands continued to provide great relief for friends and family many years after his retirement.

We, his family are at a great loss. Losing a wonderful man and father is a hard reality. He was taken from us much to soon at the young age of 64. Forever in our hearts and minds he will stay! We are at peace knowing he has been reunited with his parents and beloved sister in the afterlife. With his sudden death, we were not prepared for expenses to cover a proper final service for him. We are asking for any donations to help with the cost for his funeral services. Any amount would be greatly appreciated.

I want to make it known what this money will be spent on.  As those who knew my dad know that to him money wasn't important in life. Life to him was about love and kindness. He proved you can give love, time and attention without the need of money! We live in a world that requires it so the funds dontated will be for his cremation and services. We will have a longtime pastor friend of my dads to speak about the wonderful life my dad shared on this world with us!

The memorial announcements will be shared soon for all his friends and family to join in celebration of his life and love for all!

Thank you!

I would like to add info as well for anyone who would like to make a donation through Paypal. This option is a way to avoid extra fees for the funds donated.

Dr. Bruce was a quiet, sweet man whose dedication to the local Jazz muscians was commendable. He will truely be missed by those who knew him and will always be remebered as the great music archivist that he dedicated his time to. God bless and keep you, Dr. Bruce.

We were privileged to meet, to speak with and to witness Dr. Marion in action doing some of his videography work in support of Kevin Amos' Each One Teach One Radio and Music Conference in April 2016.  Dr. Marion was, certainly, a true lover and promoter of Jazz and the Jazz Music Community, and a fine all-around gentleman.  Our condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of Dr. Marion.

Just yesterday I was trying to contact Bruce. He was the videographer for my Each One Teach One, Teach One Conferences.

I am so saddened by Dr. Bruce's passing. Could someone please call me to let me know where services are, etc. My office phone is 412-352-6749.

Dr. Bruce Marion called himself a Jazz Addict but what he did for the music, musicians and tradition he loved was to unselfishly, at his own expense, provide a mirror documenting the local Jazz scene in Pittsburgh for almost 20 years. His tribute will last in posterity as a window into the local jazz scene, unfettered by editing or commentary so anyone in the world can enjoy what he enjoyed from a front row seat at no cost or need to travel.  Every event he recorded was properly annotated as to time, place and personnel creating an archive that rarely exists elsewhere and would not exist at all were it not for his love, passion, time, attention to detail and personal expense.

It was definitely NOT a commercial undertaking in any way as some mistakenly thought it to be. Now it has sadly and suddenly come to an end with his unexpected passing.

Those of us who knew him and were well documented by him have all received numerous copies of all the footage he recorded of us in DVD form. Those who did not have the pleasure of knowing him or his work can visit the Pittsburgh jazz scene through his Pittsburgh Jazz YouTube channel where you can experience what you missed.

If each of us would contribute $1-5 dollars toward his funeral expenses, the expense goal would be covered readily.  We are appealing to the entire 3000+ membership of this network to contribute even the smallest amount to lift this burden from his family who shared him so unselfishly with us.

We can do this!!!

Thank you,

Doc
