Attended PITT from 1975 to 1979. My son went to business school in 2004 downtown and remained in the area. Also have many friends and relatives there.
Favorite Pittsburgh musicians/performers
Stanley T, George Benson, Ahmad Jamal, Art Blakey, Roy Eldridge, I once met the great Kenny Clarke and bought a Miles cd because he is on it. Ray Brown, I loved Eddie Jefferson when I lived in Pgh.. Nathan Davis is a mentor , I heard Eric Kloss at Sunny Days, The great Harold Betters, Walt Harper, David Moore,Lou Stellute and Jay Willis are awesome, My main brother Dan Wasson on bass! Roger Humpries is still awesome. Dr. Nelson Harrison low to the bone and high in the sky on that Trombetto in the Blues Orphans. Jessica Lee , Tony Campbell, James Johnson is always mean on them drums! Barbara Ray sings sweet blues
Favorite Jazz Radio or media station
I remember WDUQ, and listened to Jazz Alive- wish I would have recorded some of those! They are probably available on cd like Piano Jazz is. I recorded some of them when I got back to Harrisburg(then they called it the American Jazz Radio festival ).Now I am back here listening to DUQ again and hope it stays jazz.
Favorite Pittsburgh Jazz Venue
Heard some great jazz at monday night at AVA's also at CJs where Roger Humphries holds court. the Hill Toppers Pub is very casual and great for blues, Penn Brewery also. Pangea is very nice.Little E's will be a favorite.
About Me:
I play saxes, flute, and bass since 1966. It was in Pgh. that Nathan Davis showed me the universiality of jazz and jazz training for preparation to play all American musics. I wanted to relocate to a larger venue, work, be a grandpop and enjoy life! So I am back and forth in the area!
Hey Kevin!
Yes, I remember that night at State College. It was a good time. I came in to assist my brother and good friend from the "Emperors" "Pepsi" James Jackson. Tell everyone that I said hello and that I send my regards to you and your family. Forgive me for just getting back, however, I've been involved in several projects and haven't been able to keep up with everyone as I would like but let's continue to stay in touch. Your friend always.
Hi Kevin, thanks for welcoming me. I started listening to jazz when I was very young but I didn't understand the music then but as an adult I met friends who enjoy listening to jazz music and then I got hooked again. I love African Jazz most and I've got my favourite artist from overseas the likes of George Benson, Miles Davis etc. Chat some other time it was nice and please tell your son to visit S.A there's more to see now
Hello Kevin, thank you for your kind remarks
Isn't that so typical- you write a tune and the ones you like the most turn out to be reminiscent of something already there...but we still have to keep on trying don't we!!
Be well and have a great day.
Amanda

Hi Kevin, Yes everybody feels the loss of Mama but what can we do but to let her soul rest in peace. Mama died while performing doing what she loved most. Music was her life and we are only left with the memories. Thanks a lotl
Dear Kevin!
I know you intended it positively and loving and nothing else! And I was very happy to recieve your comment!
But you still know what I mean don´t you!
Take care and stay blessed.
Amanda
Dear Kevin, thank you so much for your kind words.
Myself I don´t write often at all either. Sometimes I think I should make myself do it more on command, like practising my horn, the tunes have a manner of just appearing when they feel like it, like once every six months or so.
But you are right. Everything resembles something that was before and I feel thankful if I can be a small small part of the roots.
Kevin you have a Great memory.I remember you also and you are right that I still Love Dexter Gordon.I wrote my thesis on him.It is great to hear from you .I hope ALL IS WELL.
Hi thanks for commenting the pic yes the house is over 200 years at one time 200 years ago it stood alone but Tokyo took over LOL
I will be Headed for this spot next to Preform for the Orphan Children of Japan in Yamanashi prefecture next I think this is the kind of place you would love. http://ko-shu.jp/fumotobo/shoukai.html
Sat in one tune with Howie Alexander and crew at Ava's last monday , with my buddy Dan Wasson at PD's wednesday, and with the Blues Orphans friday at Hilltoppers, did not want to leave Pittsburgh! Heard good music and visited a good friend from PITT and stayed with another brother who worked a poll tues 14hrs! Of course my family out there are always a joy to be around- kev
Thank`s for that mini key board lesson a couple weeks ago at PD`s Pub.
" On Amazing grace and the black keys " You sound great on them horns too brother. Peace & blessings Smid
Hey Kevin,
great hearing from you & plating with you briefly at PD's Pub a couple of weeks ago! Besides Nelson, Harold Betters & I there are very few trombonists in Pittsburgh who venture outside of the various big bands in the area. There's a young guy named Quintin that comes out sometimes & Reggie Watkins when he's in town but that's it. How's the music scene in Harrisburg?
Brother Kev, I was the guy at the bar listening with my boy ( the drummer who knew your uncle in the other burgh). I was telling you about my adventure trying to teach myself a mulitude of instruments, i unknowingly balance the flute on my shoulder and correlect the piano notes in trems of black and white keys. thats when you told me about amazing grace being written by someone with that same musical vibe.
Ha Ha, No problem bro!!!! I was telling Dan about the mix up just the other day. He put a nice memorial jam together for a local tenor cat that passed last year. He also thinks highly of you too, and i am honored to know both of you as good peps and great musicians. Enjoy the summer.
Kev, wish I could make it down to Kevin Amos's on Saturday, gotta work. I'm not far from Century II either, it's just that my schedule is all messed up. take care and have fun on Saturday
Come on and sit in kevin! Can see www.jessicaleesong.com for upcoming non-public gigs in region. . . hope all is great w you and look forward to seeing and hearing you again soon! truly, jess
Hey! My brother Kevin, thanks much for your comment, yes he helped quite a few people, funny enough i learned more about chords, rhythms, harmonies, voicings and playing off time from him,he gave me a break,he also loved jazz, funny enough i listened and played jazz when not on the road,George Benson,Earl Klugh,Wes,Grant Green etc.,i got more into jazz with him and being around so many great musicians,he brought me to pittsburg twice, again thanks my brother,Emmett North Jr.
I want to do a short tour (2 weeks) in your area at some clubs. It doesn't have to pay a lot. I have been here 17 years and I need to see if my voice still is good enough for the American audiences. Any suggestions about some places to contact.
Hey, Kev .. sounds like ya had the house jumping .. that's always fulfilling. Staying positive that it all will be coming together .. full circle on our future endeavors .. until then -- will be seeing you soon.
As the changing of the season .. so are those that we meet... some stay for a reason why others slip away. But when we think of all the memories some good and some bad -- it was all for a purpose - all did not make us sad. Some were learning experiences as we traveled on our way .. never knowing what the future holds or what the outcome may be ... only one thing we can be sure of as we travel on our way .. and that is God loves us and HE doesn't make mistakes... God -- HE loves us and HE doesn't make mistakes.

I first heard the great Harold Betters in the late 70S and he was a master who was very accessible musically
Decades later I got to sit in with him and he played in a nice Italian restaurant in Wilmerding and was very accommodating. Then he played an Easter show for youth at a Catholic church in Uniontown ! Pied piper on When The Saints. A friend who was given jazz albums asked me if I heard of Harold after reading the liner notes. I told I saw him in my. College days. I showed my buddy who plays bone a AD Harold did for King? Trombones in Downbeat! I have 500 of them as I subscribed June 1975 ( biweekly) to June 2010 lol.

Hi, Kev:
Haven't touched base with you in a long time.. Hope and pray all is well with you and family.
We, too, have new addition to the family - my first great grandchild .. Her name is Lae'la Jacori .. born July 30th ...God is good.
I did go to Ian Kane's jam session in Lawrenceville at Hambone. It was most enjoyable .. got a chance to do a couple of Standards ;-)
Take care ..
Your sista/friend,
