Favorite Pittsburgh musicians/performers
I have been kind of out of touch with Pittsburgh since retiring from Verizon and starting my business. I spend so many hours creating music and art and keeping the business afloat that I have very little time left for enjoying other artists. I guess some of my favorites are Etta Cox, Al Dow, Louise Jones, Esther Cullen, Esther Gilbert, Clarence Grant, Rodney McCoy, My Brother's Keepers, Sounds Unlimited.
Favorite Pittsburgh Jazz Venue
James Street Cafe, PJ's, but we have been so busy with our music ministry and business, we don't get into the Burgh as much as we would like to.
About Me:
Joby Brown, a Beaver Falls native, and Pitt Jazz Band alumnus and his wife, Miriam ‘MiMi’ Brown, a Toledo, Ohio native, are the founders of the present day music ministry, Re-Konception!, which actually began as the popular eleven piece jazz/rock/funk band, Konception!, comprised of the late Joseph ‘Squeakie’ Saunders (guitars) and Leroi Gumphries (electric violin), Tony Paine (guitar), Mallory Winbush (drums), Samantha ‘Sammie’ Blake (piano), Derment Winston (saxes), Jimmy Webb (bass), Timmy Biggs (trumpet), Larry Jones (tenor sax), Gordy Metz (tenor sax & vocals) and Joby Brown (lead vocals & melodica). Konception!, the featured band of Pittsburgh radio station, WKTQ (13Q), played on bills with The Ohio Players and Tavares, at Point State Park and local theaters and drive-ins. The band morphed into the four member jazz-fusion combo, Luendian Konception!,featuring Brown, Saunders, Winbush and Martel ‘Jerry’ Brown (bass). During the late ‘70’s and ‘80’s, both groups played original compositions during engagements at parks, theatres, festivals & clubs in Pittsburgh.

Luendian means “Harmony through Peace, Love & Understanding!”

Joby sang with Sons of Thunder, a Christian a capella Gospel recording group, founded by Pastor Emeritus, Calvin C. Brown, from 1991 until 2010. Other group members were Pastor Dan Henderson, Deacon Willie Scott, Deacon Greg Tymous, Regis Bolden and Alvin Rodgers. Pastor Emeritus Brown, Minister Bobby Jones, Deacon Kenny Gibson and Deacon John Hosey have also sung with Sons of Thunder.

In 2005, the Lord gave Joby a song, “Mirror Of You,” after many years had gone by without any song writing. The Lord not only gave a song, but in 2007, added the command, “to share all of the music He gives with the entire world.” This led to the founding of the 2010 Black Essence Award Hall of Fame music ministry/recording artist, Re-Konception! by Joby and Miriam ‘MiMi’ Brown on May 11, 2007. Re-Konception!, operated as a group between 2008 and 2011, with members, the late Deacon Jack ‘JaReese’ Reese (2008-2009), Darlene Wilcox (2008-2011), Linda Braxton-Jackson (2009-2010), Rick Jones (2010-2011) & Antoine Williams (2010).

Joby and Miriam, members of BMI and CCMNI Christian Songwriters Network, write, record, produce, publish and distribute God’s gifts to them on Narrow Way Music, their iindependent label. Their music is now playing in more than 250 countries, on their custom internet radio station on Jango Radio Airplay. They also design and create several lines of original art based Christian products, such as Framed Glossy pictographs, stationery, Mini Note cards, programs, brochures, catalogues, calendars...

The Lord has also revealed that He is and was behind the naming of all three (K!) groups. The “K” is symbolic of the way our Lord KEEPS us, will never leave or forsake us. He is our Refuge, Shelter, Tower, Fortress and Shield. Re-Konception!,was reborn and reshaped from the ashes of the first two groups by The Lord, and is actually a surname. The Exclamation Point stands for Christ Jesus, our Lord, Savior, Redeemer, God and King.

Christ Jesus works with Miriam and Joby in the ways many of their songs are ‘Konceived.’ Miriam receives song themes and lyric content during her Bible study and during sermons. Joby has received many songs via dreams, during the waking state, through visions and meditation. Miraculously, every time the Lord has delivered a song this way, it has always been at 6:00 AM. They both also write many songs through their Christian experience.

“Be still and know that God is always faithfully in the midst!”

Joby is an independent correspondent for the New Pittsburgh Courier, and was formerly a Music Market Magazine columnist and Beaver County Times enterrainment correspondent.
