For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

 

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

im afraid my comment will be rather negative.  i consider myself a purist...its be-bop for me.  all the new hybrids they call jazz...are jive...strictly jive.  i could enumerate dozens of musicians...and here are just a couple.  Horace Silver, Coltrane, Mobley, ray brown, basie, peterson, tatum, stitt, hank jones, teh jazz messengers...thats just a smattering.  there are some great players around today...but...no place to play.  the listening public is into funk, rap rock and roll etc etc etc.  that aint jazz.  we had ourm day.  Parker and dizzy lasted for some 25 yrs.  in came rock, and the listening public found it so basic, they could jump around, listen understand it .  you get the idea.  the kinda jazz i grew up on...you hd to listen!  it wasnt three chord changes...and over and over...and out.  I just came back from chicago.  seven and a half MILLION people.  rush st..rush st...all you want to dig.  Bull..I heard a group at Andy's.  ok, very good pianist, drummer and bass.  Sax man was tryin, but couldnt play.  vocalist..couldnt sing.  The Jazz Showcase was just ok...but they hammered the customer.  $25 to sit down.  ten twelve bucks for a drink.  forget about the food.  cant draw people that way.  Went to jillys...pianist was sub-standard and didnt even have a couple decent side-men...his rythmn sect and reed men...WERE ON DISCS!  A young cat was tellin the pianist he was gonna be a pianist.  FORGAT THAT...BE A PLUMBER. GOOD ADV!!
