PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

to get a rough visualization of when commands were entered we can tell gnuplot we're dealing with time data on the x-axis by setting xdata time and timefmt and plot each command as a point, spreading the points across the y-axis at random to make it easier to get a sense of their density. gnuplot interprets using 2: (rand (0)) to mean that we're … We can not edit/ modify the band structure in P4Vasp.What we can do is , export your band structure as a file.dat format ( go to graph/export data). and then Use gnuplot to plot your band optional function: set Gnuplot path manual attention: for windows: path with slash '/' not backslash '' Parameters: path--> the gnuplot path: Returns: set isoline density (grid) for plotting functions as surfaces (for 3d plots) Definition at line 1175 of file gnuplot_i.hpp. If this causes actual program failure, try "gnuplot --slow". The antialiasing option produces artifacts in some versions of Qt. In particular point types 1 and 2 appear unbalanced due to shading. You can configure support for both wxt and qt into the same gnuplot executable, but only one of these can be used in any given gnuplot session. 1. Relax the system to a converged geometry. 2. Using the relaxed geometry, perform static calculation using the following tags: 3. Sum the output charge files AECCAR0 AECCAR2 using the the chgsum A "page" or "screen" or "canvas" is the entire area addressable by `gnuplot`. On a desktop it is a full window; on a plotter, it is a single sheet of paper. When discussing data files, the term "record" denotes a single line of text in. the file, that is, the characters between newline or end-of-record characters. To fill with solid, fill => { color => '#33bb33', density => 0.2, } "color" may be named color or RGB (#RRGGBB). "density" may be a real number from 0 (empty) to 1. border Border of the boxes. Has effect only on plotting styles with boxes and if "fill" is set. "color" (either named color or RGB) is the only supported property. Batch/Interactive Operation. gnuplot may be executed in either batch or interactive modes, and the two may even be mixed together on many systems.. Any command-line arguments are assumed to be names of files containing gnuplot commands (with the exception of standard X11 arguments, which are processed first). Each file is loaded with the load command, in the order specified. reset_all () resets a gnuplot session and sets all variables to default. Gnuplot &. reset_plot () resets a gnuplot session (next plot will erase previous ones) Gnuplot &. savetofigure (const std::string filename, const std::string terminal="ps") Saves a gnuplot to a file named filename. Defaults to saving pdf. In order to make the order of the entries in the legend more intuitive we can simple tell Gnuplot to invert them. The result is shown in Fig. 2. set key invert.
