PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

A vibratory pump, or vibe pump, is a small electromagnetic workhorse. A piston attached to a magnet is set inside a metal coil. Electrical current runs through the coil causing the magnet to rapidly move the piston back and forth, pushing water through the machine. Your average vibe pump clocks in at sixty pushes per second. Benefits of upgrading to a manual espresso machine. 1. Save on the cost of pods. Pod coffee isn't so convenient when you consider the ongoing costs of buying coffee pods. "Pod machines are relatively cheap, but the pods are expensive, costing close to $100/kg," says Mit. In contrast, ground coffee or coffee beans can be found in supermarkets Step 1: Design. 2 More Images. The main components of the machine are the cylinder, piston (with an inbuilt one-way valve) and lever. The lever provides the mechanical advantage required to generate the required pressure within the cylinder. Answer (1 of 8): If you are talking about espresso coffee machine, then this image below explains best How an Espresso Machine Works. As seen the the diagram: 1. Mains water flows into the espresso coffee machine, usually via a water softener and carbon filter to remove the impurities and hard More so, this machine, as with any manual espresso maker, will require you to disassemble and clean the portafilter and piston after every shot. But the cleaning process is very simple and takes less than a minute to do. Slow Espresso Watch on Pros Environmental friendly: no plugs nor pods needed. Easy to use and clean 1. La Pavoni Lever Manual Espresso Machine - Best Overall. The La Pavoni Professional 16-Cup Espresso Machine is a simple lever-operated machine that delivers up to 16 two-ounce cups of espresso at one time. It has an internal thermostat that keeps your water the right temperature in the 38-ounce solid brass broiler. Here we nail down the best lever espresso machines on the market today. In my opinion, the La Pavoni Europiccola is the best value for money in this range, but let's see what I found during my research. So, How Does This Manual Espresso Machine Work? For true espresso connoisseurs, there's often nothing like a high-end manual espresso machine. Learn how to use an espresso machine in nine simple steps: Make sure your portafilters are locked into the group head before use so that they are always hot when pulling a shot. 1. Detach portafilter and wipe clean to remove any leftover residue. 2. Using an espresso bean grinder, dispense your freshly ground beans into your portafilter. With all espresso machines, having a good grinder is very important for making the best espresso possible, but this is especially true with lever espresso machines that tend to be more sensative. We suggest a good quality conical burr or flat burr grinder (such as the Turin DF64). How Does a Manual Espresso Machine Work? Need a manual for your Gaggia Vetro Espresso Machine?
