PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

Everybody seems to be able to get good accuracy in the 1000 - 1250fps range with either one of those powders. If you want to push your bullets faster for hunting IMR4198, IMR3031 and RL7 are the favorites. I use IMR3031 and 300gr JHP's in my hunting loads and 2400 with a 405gr cast boolit for paper punching. The safe has a No1S, 45-70, 133 series and a Marlin Guide Gun, 45-70, stainless, laminated. Both are exceptional rifles and differentiated enough to define different tasks. I added LimbSaver pads to both. The Ruger wears a Leupold 1-4X20 and the Marlin is iron sighted. At 300 yards, the .450 will drop 30.7", while the .45-70 will drop 37.2". This can be a significant difference if you are planning to shoot to the end of these calibers' effective ranges, but if you are using a gun for bear defense or other very close range applications, trajectory may be less of a factor. Recoil 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun & 300gr.lead bullets. Thread starter Waynard; Start date May 22, A 350 cast bullet in the 1400 to 1500 fps will be pretty mild as far as 45-70 goes and it will shoot through from any direction any deer that ever left a hoof print in the mud easily out to 200 yards. Check out the Accurate powders load data for XMP 5744 The receiver is pre-tapped for mounting optics. The 1895GBL features a big loop lever that is an asset when wearing heavy gloves. The lever operates a massive stainless steel bolt that, in turn, cocks the external hammer. The trigger on our test rifle broke cleanly with an average trigger weight of 6 lbs. Moving back to 300 yards, the 325 FTX rounds still managed a fantastic 4.5" 3 shot group; so the Marlin 1895 45-70 with this load was managing 1.5 minutes of angle accuracy out to 300 yards-impressive. The fine elevation subtensions of NX8 scope allowed precise aiming for longer ranges, aiding in fantastic groups. The two offers were the Marlin 1895 Trapper in 45-70, and the Marlin 1894 44 Mag with the older JM barrel. I use the Marlin Guide Gun 45-70 for guide work and a saddle rifle. The round works amazing and did on a bear hunt in 2011 in Saskatchewan for a black bear. Thing is remarkably accurate. These sights are available in both traditional and ghost-ring styles and are perfect for shooters who want to improve their accuracy at longer ranges. The Marlin 1895 sights are also very easy to install and can be added to your rifle in just minutes. For the money you could get a used JM stamped gun for what a new Henry would cost. I bought a used jm Marlin guide gun 45-70 at a pawn shop for $499.00 plus tax 2 months ago. I like my 1895GBL just fine, I think it's cooler than the regular 1895 anyway. I have a 44mag Marlin and a 45/70 Marlin (thumper). Marlin 1895G Guide Gun 70462 45-70 Government The "Guide Gun" moniker says it all — short, easy to maneuver, fast and powerful. This rifle's accuracy surprised us in a very good way. By. Joe Woolley-Published: July 21, 2020 The Marlin 1895, as mentioned, has a solid
