PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

Within four steps: Start → asemaps → Mapping → Layouts, this tutorial serves as a guide for geologists on how to create a digital, geological map with the open source GIS program QGIS 3. The QGIS Overview Figure 6: Using QGIS Recall that QGIS is a tool for viewing, querying, editing, composing and publishing electronic maps. It combines functionality for electronic mapping and spatial analysis. For those of you who have seen or used the ArcView 3.x product, it's quite similar. 1.Start QGIS (if you don't have QGIS open) Changelog for QGIS 3.10 ¶. Changelog for QGIS 3.10. ¶. QGIS 3.10 brings an extensive list of new changes and a lot of polishing of existing features - the highlights of which we will try to cover here. As always can we remind you that QGIS is an open source project and if you are able to, consider supporting our work through donations or This section describes the major steps to georeference the image (Note: you do not need to add the image (raster) to the QGIS project). 1.Start the Georeferer plugin, it will open the plugin window and the blank main plugin window. 2.Specify the image you would like to georeference by clicking on the []button and selecting the file. The last days I was asked a lot, how and where to install the new QGIS 3. Until now there are no Windows binaries available (as far as I know…). But you can install and run QGIS 3.0 on Linux. If you are running Ubuntu 17.10 (artful) or even 18.04 (bionic) (beware, it's still alpha ), it is quite easy to install: Open … Read More QGIS has a lot of documentation. All documentation is in English but some documents such as the user guide are also available in other languages. You will find documentation for every QGIS long term release on the respective documentation website. Get involved and help us write a better documentation. The feature-packed release of QGIS 3.26 Buenos Aires includes a vast number of enhancements to a range of advanced core functionalities. This includes numerous improvements to 3D capabilities, improved tooling for point clouds, and the introduction of a new profile plotting framework for the creation of cross-sections and elevation profiles. Basic QGIS Tools. This tutorial will cover the tools needed to complete a basic analysis in QGIS. The data we will use is from Edinburgh City Council. Export as SVG, and Export as PDF. Image will allow us to save to a standard image format like a .jpg or .png. And SVG is an image format which maintains the contents of the image as vectors QGIS 3.10. For users: Read the QGIS User guide; Follow the tutorials in the QGIS Training manual; Learn GIS basics in A gentle introduction in GIS; For documentation writers: Learn how to write docs using the Documentation Guidelines; For developers: QGIS Server provides a web map service (WMS) using the same libraries as the Quantum GIS (QGIS) desktop application. Maps and print templates created in QGIS desktop can be published as web maps simply by copying the QGIS project file into the server directory. The resulting web maps look exactly the same as in the desktop. This course was created using QGIS 3.8 and the material should be valid for many years to come as there are not expected to be major changes to the PyQGIS package after the recent change to QGIS 3.0. All you need for this course is a basic understanding of QGIS and Python. We will be using the editor included with QGIS to write scripts.
