PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

This treatment manual provides mental health professionals with instructions for conducting written exposure therapy (WET) with clients who have posttraumatic stress disorder. Authors Denise Sloan and Brian Marx developed WET in response to a growing demand for an effective PTSD treatment that is easier to implement, more affordable, and has lower dropout rates than other trauma interventions. Exposure therapy has been scientifically demonstrated to be a helpful treatment or treatment component for a range of problems, including: • Phobias • Panic Disorder • Social Anxiety Disorder • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder • Generalized Anxiety Disorder There are several variations of exposure therapy. In this commentary, we first provide a background on how written exposure therapy (WET) was developed and describe the efficacy data to support its use. Following this, we will discuss the manner and methods in which WET was used by Austern. Throughout our commentary we will refer to the empirical data on PTSD treatment and the gaps Narrative exposure therapy (NET) is a short-term treatment for survivors of multiple and complex trauma, developed by Maggie Schauer, Frank Neuner, and Thomas Elbert. The evidence base supports the use of NET for survivors of multiple trauma and NET is recognized by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence as an evidence-based treatment for PTSD. Moreover, 5 of the 7 veterans no longer met diagnostic criteria for PTSD 3 months following treatment. These findings suggest that written exposure therapy holds promise as a brief, well tolerated treatment for veterans with PTSD. However, additional research using randomized controlled trial methodology is needed to confirm its efficacy. Written exposure therapy represents a promising intervention to prevent PTSD after cardiovascular events. Written exposure therapy is a brief exposure-based therapy, founded on the principles of Pennebaker and Beale's written disclosure procedure.11 The treatment protocol consists of 5 sessions, each comprising 30 minutes of writing. Prolonged exposure therapy is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that exposes a person to traumatic events so much that they become used to the trauma and they don't feel the traumatic thoughts as dangerous, this is one because most of the people avoid their trauma and that reinforces them. In PET the person is exposed to trauma again and This treatment manual provides mental health professionals with instructions for conducting written exposure therapy (WET) with clients who have posttraumatic stress disorder. Authors Denise Sloan and Brian Marx developed WET in response to a growing demand for an effective PTSD treatment that is easier to implement, more affordable, and has lower dropout rates than other trauma interventions. During exposure, you'll purposefully face trauma reminders in a safe and controlled way. Example Exposure Activities . Talk about my trauma . Go to the location of my trauma ; Go somewhere that reminds me of my trauma . Participate in an activity that reminds me of my trauma . Hold an object that Description. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) is a treatment for survivors of multiple traumatic events who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). NET is an evidence-based treatment with good efficacy data supporting its use in the treatment of multiply-traumatised adults and chil
