From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.
Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s? Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?
Some answers can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.
For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz. One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical. We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it. When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.
Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.
WELCOME!

Jazz Fans,
As I’m sure you already know, Tuesday is Valentine’s Day and since Savoy is closed on Tuesdays, Monday Night Jazz will celebrate that day with the sophisticated and romantic sounds of vocalist, Fred Pugh III and Tony Campbell’s Jazz Surgery.
With that in mind, Savoy is reserving most of the dining room tables for all those diners celebrating Valentine’s Day with us. As always, the cocktail tables at the front of the house and the bar will be available for…

Hi everyone,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I just got word of some exciting things happening with Monday Night Jazz at Savoy!
Before I go any further, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for helping make Savoy one of the best new spots for jazz in the “burgh” over the past few years. It has been compared to such iconic Pittsburgh jazz venues as The Encore and The Balcony (just to name two). We are well on our way (if not already there) to be remembered in days…

Hi Jazz Family,
Once again, I want to thank all of you who came out to honor and support Mr. Chizmo Charles Anderson, a true Pittsburgh legend, at Savoy Monday Night Jazz on December 23, 2013. It showed just how many people feel as blessed as I do to have the honor of calling this man, mentor and friend.
Due to the fact that many of you, who love this great artist, made me aware that you had lost contact with him and was concerned that he might not even be…

One of the key tools to promoting the album will be a video of one of the songs shot at the release party! To that point, I would like all of you who shot smartphone video and…

Hi Fellow Lovers of Jazz,
Some of you may have heard that there might be a CD release concert for my latest CD, “Escape To Love”, on August 10th, at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. That will not be the case. Due to efforts needed to make sure that the best possible product is released, the 10th of August concert turned out to be impossible to pull off. The next possible chance for a release party for the CD would be in November of this…

Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks to all of you who were able to attend our Special Edition of Monday Night Jazz @ Savoy, featuring the exciting new group, "Elevations"! These five young jazz lions were a smash hit, the joint was jumpin' and it was packed (in spite of the rain). It's not surprising that they are beginning to take the jazz world by storm, what with mentors the likes of Roger Humphries, Dwayne Dolphin and Sean Jones, how could they not! And Savoy was happy to be among the first…

Hi everyone,
Please note that the title for the posting about Monday Night Jazz @ Savoy for November 12, 2012 mistakenly refered to Maureen Budway as the featured artist for that date. In fact, Maureen performed at Savoy this past week on November 5, 2012. As correctly stated in the body of the post, the featured artist for November 12th is the wonderful songstress, JUDI FIGEL. Please note this correction on your calendar and come join us at Savoy for a great night of music…
