Friends, I'll be back on the "wheels" at Kelly's, 6012, Penn Circle South in East Liberty from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Nothing but funk, soul & jazz pre-1978.
At Kelly's Bar and Lounge in East Liberty, art deco and 1950s chic combine to form a modern, hip feel. Mixed with a soundtrack so diverse that clients are just as likely to hear Parliament Funkadelic as they are Fear Factory, Kelly's has developed a reputation as one of the city's unexpected gems.
As a group walks in ready for DJ Stephan's old school '70s mix of funk, R&B, and jazz, fans yell requests at him. "Hey, don't yell at the DJ", he responds with a laugh.
The difference with Kelly's is that it not only attracts its neighbors in East Liberty, Friendship, and Shadyside, but people from Homewood, the North Side, and just about every other Pittsburgh neighborhood, as well.
In the words of Fitzgerald, Kelly's is a "real lounge." It's comfortable, not too cute or pretentious--just straight up, and all are welcome. Saddle up to the bar or find a booth, and be ready with your order. Like most places, a constant flow of folks keeps it interesting.Hope to see you there.
