Master drummer Michael Carvin beats his path to greatness

Drummer Michael Carvin says there is no real mystery about why so many great drummers have come from Pittsburgh.

He looks at a hard-working city, where success is never guaranteed, and says that simply creates an attitude that demands a high level of effort.

"It wasn't that the city produced great drummers," he says. "Rather, they were simply great people who played drums."

Carvin, who runs the Michael Carvin School of Drumming in New York City, will be here Saturday for a workshop, panel

Memory of Mike Taylor [Poem by Michael Dennison]

MEMORY OF MIKE TAYLOR – A YEAR ROUND
[Poem by Michael Dennison]

A spring day, rain for the grass
puts the green on the table and evenings of late sun
and then the History Channel
time in a man’s life to ripen, to pass

as June crawls in with a birthday, stands up
like green corn on the stalk, fresh and wide open
to a good joke, the promise of a late show loaded with guests,
with irony gentle, universal as night

and June struts into July. Fireworks churn
in endless blue dusk of heaven as steaks… Continue

When are we going to get together to listen to some jazz? I'm always out there. Went to Tanna in East Liberty last Wed. and they were rockin' it: Jeff Montgomery, John Hall, Donna Davis, and Mark Strickland. I am performing at Little E's for the first time on Friday, November 20. If you aren't busy, stop by.

Took me awhile to make it out to your link. That's Don Vappielle (vappielle.com). A N.O Creole...his family's been in the music business for 130 years. He cam to Pittsburgh after Katrina (since he couldn't go home), and played a couple of gigs here. He is just SOOOOoooo musical. When he walks on the stage the audience moves. You can hear that he is using guitar weight strings on his banjo. He was a bass and guitar player until Danny Barker said "try this" and handed him his banjo. Then he looked at it and immediately returned it..and Barker said "no, I mean try it."
I first met him at the Black Banjo Gathering...he quit Preservation Hall to attend it (but had been disatisfied with them anyhow).

Hey Jagsu,
Great playing -- musicality, style, delicacy, technique -- you've got it all.
What a treat to jam with you.
Best regards.
