PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

About Me:
Welcome and thank you for becoming a member of IndieMADMP3.com.
If you are reading this I am assuming that music is your passion.

About three years ago I met an older gentleman that had such passion; in fact it was his life. This man, a BLUES MAN, at heart was 73 when I met him. He drove a raggedy old van with his name and phone number painted on the sides.

I met him in a small bar in Youngstown, Ohio one fall night after having attended a family members wedding. He was a one man band Sound system, two keyboards and a Yamaha with built in midi sounds. His name was Elray Johnson, he passed away last month after an extended illness. You can see his page on this site. He will always be a member and a friend, in fact this site is for him, and as my 8 year old granddaughter said ”We still have his music.”

In the course of his life he had worked the Midwest, upstate New York, and Western Ohio. He ended up where his roots were Farrell Pa. He had three CDs produced with original tunes he had penned and sang. I though that his music and songs were as good as any I had heard. We became close friends and I offered to help him in any way I could. I saw that he still had dreams. He loved Ray Charles and wanted to do a Ray Charles Tribute show. We rounded up some of his old band members and some younger new talent that was willing to participate. We premiered the show in a club downtown Youngstown at 10 Pm on a cold winter night. We had no budget and played for nothing, but we did it! It was reward enough to see the Old Man (as I affectingly referred to him as) Smile and be so enthused.

I saw the results of a person with determination and passion, but no resources and thought only if he was twenty years younger? Would his life have been better?

I started Indie Mad MP3.com.As A resource for aspiring musicians as well as a gateway for Global exposure for their work so others will have the chance to realize their dreams.

We do 4 things:

1st. We provide a platform where an artist can display and sell his / her work.
Our digital format for selling the music can be produced at much lower costs than my friend could have ever dreamed of.

2nd.We provide needed information at little or no cost.

3rd We provide our Pirate radio Station ‘Indie Mad MP3’ as a free broadcast source so that your work can to be heard globally.

4th Recently I added a Social Network where people with the same interests can visit, chat and share ideas at little or no cost. This is where you are now. Please use these fabulous resources and realize your dreams.

I might add, I refer to “We” throughout this note. At this time ”We” is me! I have no board of directors or stock holders or even any investors. I think it’s as “grass roots” as it can get. Hopefully people will read this and realize that, here is an opportunity to help like people realize their dreams. If you are interested in helping grow this project please contact me.
