THE STRONG CARD

PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

THE MUSICAL HILL

I lived in a second floor apartment at 2173 Webster Avenue. There, amidst all the goins' ons...The Perry Bar, on down to the Crawford Grill #2, shoot over to Center Avenue where there were flourishing businesses...as far as the eye could see...both ways...both sides; head on down past The Savoy Ballroom, The New Granada Theater, hustle on past the Roosevelt Theater, constantly weaving through an endless flow of moving people until I'd reach The Irene Kaufmann Settlement; turn left on Helman… Continue

Techno futures.

Techno futures.

Many years ago, I had thought what an amazing thing technology was. It was ever moving always improving, and solving problems. My thoughts drifted to the next resting stop in entertainment. I wondered how they were going to get the media to us. Like Video killing the radio star. Computer killed the video star, even thought it is not dead yet, TV. is ,as we know it, heading out.. As a matter of facts, communication as we know it is out the window.

This… Continue

Happy New Year

Hey Nelson & all the PJN folks. This is my first blog. Hope it works.
Best wishes for 2009. My production of "The Snow Queen" opened and had a nice run at the Playhouse...but I've had some pretty serious
leg surgery which has curtailed some Holiday Festivities. So have a couple on me!

SEASON'S GREETINGS and HAPPY NEW YEAR

"Friendship is like music; two strings tuned alike, will both stir though but only one you strike." ---Francis Quarles

We are individually and collectively blessed by each other in the fashion of the above quote and together we reach beyond our individual preferences to deploy the vibrations of love, peace, friendship, joy, and human kinship throughout the known and unknown Universe when we share our personal truth with another. We thank each of you for sharing yourselves on this… Continue

hgh releaser pills

hgh

HGH and HGH supplements are probably the greatest discoveries in the area of anti aging ever made. HGH has been proven to smooth out wrinkles, HGH will build lean muscle mass, HGH increases metabolism which means weight loss and a more efficient body. There are so many positive benefits of increasing levels of HGH that it is hard to name them all, though I will try. HGH can slow the process of graying hair, scientific studies have shown that HGH builds good bone density and HGH…

Winters Grave

Bitterly chomping down to the bone, my god man, don’t you have pity? You horrible bastard, forsaken son of her majesty. She flung onto us you’re misery, through cosmetic actions your born, chaotically mixed with deviant precision; violence rapped in a northern storm. Joyous I wonder, are you full of glee? Does your raise of terror give you pleasure? Do these deeds please your mother?

On the twilight of the year you arrive with your silent death, little seen nor heard just your… Continue

Visionary New Afrikan Jazz Poetics from South Central Los Angeles Darrell Jónsson interviews Will Alexander and Ghasem Batamuntu

Astral choirs chime beneath furious yet prosaic percussion, while brass as soft as palm trees on the sea of a distant planet chants. Soon the surreal Sci-fi voice of Will Alexander, begins to encant his sophisticated language of dreams while the solar brass charts of Ghasem Batamuntu and the Nu Nova Compound's ensemble rips a hole in space. North American realms of New England, New France, Nova Scotia, New Spain have long ruled, now New Afrika has its place in the mix. That all this is beauty… Continue
