PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

Pgh Jazz Society

In our very tenuous economic times, I'm not sure how a private club can have the audacity to "charge" a venue to host weekly live music offerings rather than the converse. As an outsider looking in this sounds very much like a "pay to play" or "protection" scam. I've performed in the previous iterations of James Street and the owners were always very gracious toward musicians and went out of their way to promote and support established and young acts most days of the week. Though I've been…

Jazz Society Leaves James Street..For the wrong reasons!

Dear Pittsburgh Jazz Society Members,

Unfortunately, it is true that the Pittsburgh Jazz Society will no longer be presenting jazz on Sunday night at James Street Gastropub & Speakeasy.  The reasons for the board's decision, as they have stated, are very questionable at best.    However, we would like to address the issues mentioned by Mr. Mowod.

James Street Gastropub & Speakeasy has been in business for slightly over one year.  As a brand new…

Second Line Saturdays w/ Phat Man Dee & the Cultural District!

There was a galactic and planetary shift of consciousness last December.

On the 21st we aligned with our solar system, the galaxy and the

universe....whether or not you spent the solstice hiding in a bunker

with a gross of rations and water purification tablets, in prayer with

drums and chanting to the moon or madly purchasing gifts to prove to

your loved ones that you really do care (I myself did a little of each, I

like to keep my bases covered), whatever…

"ELEVATIONS" was a SMASH at Savoy Monday Night Jazz: Special Edition.

Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks to all of you who were able to attend our Special Edition of Monday Night Jazz @ Savoy, featuring the exciting new group, "Elevations"! These five young jazz lions were a smash hit, the joint was jumpin' and it was packed (in spite of the rain). It's not surprising that they are beginning to take the jazz world by storm, what with mentors the likes of Roger Humphries, Dwayne Dolphin and Sean Jones, how could they not!  And Savoy was happy to be among the first…

Who were these veritable gentlemen who in the early 1950's promoted jazz gigs with artists like Charlie Parker at venues such as the Syria Mosque?

THE AUDIENCE SUPPORTS YOU

Musicians,

As a Big Fan of Jazz, I just want you to know how much your audience appreciates your talents as do I. It is however disheartening ,when the audience is not acknowledged during a performance. I have recently attended a performance, where the musicians talk among themselves in between songs and yawn during their performance. I, as an appreciative fan, make an effort to support your love of this awesome music and just want to be shown a little respect in return. Please address…

CORRECTION TO THE POSTING FOR NOV 12th MONDAY NIGHT JAZZ EVENT @ SAVOY

Hi everyone,

Please note that the title for the posting about Monday Night Jazz @ Savoy for November 12, 2012 mistakenly refered to Maureen Budway as the featured artist for that date.  In fact, Maureen performed at Savoy this past week on November 5, 2012.  As correctly stated in the body of the post, the featured artist for November 12th is the wonderful songstress, JUDI FIGEL.  Please note this correction on your calendar and come join us at Savoy for a great night of music…
