PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

       In Her Own Words
Here's a page to let people know of Pgh. Jazzers who may be in the hospital or ailing.

Please send your prayers, good thoughts, good wishes, a card, a visit, play/sing a song for them (The healing power of music - it matters!) Post a song for them! Post a photo for them...you get the picture, right?

I have seen the difference this (showing you care) can make...in so many ways. Let somebody know!

Please post names, contact info here.
Thanks!!!

Hi Pgh Jazz community
If you know of someone who could use well-wishes, prayers, a visit, a good thought, etc, please post info here.
You can post a song for them here too - or play one for them on your gig...it can make a difference.

all the best,
Devorah
get well Bobby N.
Hi All,

I've been having problems with my family about my health and my career choices.

No matter how hard I try or no matter how successful I am I get verbally knocked down by family members.

In fact, I got verbally smacked by one of my family members saying that I'm worse than a retard and I'm "Unemployed" when I'm involved in several bands and work very hard at Jazz Workshop, Inc. as Artistic Director at Jazz Workshop, Inc.

I've even been successful with putting Outreach Programs together for Jazz Workshop, Inc.

And at Christmas, I played at a couple churches, and my one brother got upset with me because I got a couple Christmas jobs when he was he one pushing me to get employment.

I'm in a terrible situation at home and really, really, need the prayers of all of you to feel good about myself and what I do for a careeer in music.

Your prayers and thoughts would be deeply appreciated.

It's a shame I'm not respected as a pro musicican/music educator at my home.

Musically,
Ed Skirtich

Ed,

We know you have your mother's support and your one brother seems to suport you by coming out to hear you. The criticizing brother may be a bit envious that you have gained many friends and supporters in the jazz world. I'm glad you are active on the network and you can acquire tons of personal support by posting some of your sounds, photos and keep voicing your opinion on these pages. I belong to about 14 other jazz networks and have over 2000 friends with whom I can communicate about music around the world. This is where the future lies and it is also where your dreams are. I recommend you follow your dreams and ignore the criticism of anyone who wants you to follow their path or who tries to dissuade you from yours. You can bet they won't eat for you, breathe for you or succeed for you either. These are things we MUST do for ourselves. Climb every mountain... ford every stream... follow every highway 'til you find your dream. You may not have a traditional job... neither did I for over 30 years... but you have a chance to make history.

Keep the faith and keep up the good work.

Doc
Hi Doc,

Things are thankfully going a lot better.

My family members are treating me a lot better now that I have some offers with getting Jazz Workshop, Inc. Outreach Programs.

Thanks for your support.

Devorah,

Thank you for starting this Forum. This is in the true spirit of our musical community where prayers and well-wishes are a most important activity. I'll feature this Forum so that the members will become more aware of it.

Love and blessings to you always,

Nelson
Thanks so much Nelson- I hope people will make use of this particular forum.
I know from experience that it can truly help.

You're doing a really good thing here with this site..Many thanks on behalf of all of us.
Great to see it growing, people showing support for each other.
blessings,
Devorah
Please place drummer Ron Tucker to your prayer list. He is in Canterbury Place and is seriously ailing.

If you believe in the power of prayer, please pray for Blues Orphans band member Roy (bones) Fitzpatrick. Bones is currently at Passavant Hosptial. Roy's in good spirits. Details may follow as they become available. Let's all wish him well. Thank you.
We all need prayer and prayer really works. Our membership is growing steadily and we can offer a service to each other through this network. There are some members who are ailing but they do not want the specifics of their problem known or discussed publicly. There are others who are known by members who also need prayer. This is not a religious issue but a spiritual one. I am asking that each one of us in our own way pray for all members and their important others and visualize healing energy emanating from this network toward all those who are in need of it.

Thank you.
That was beautifully put, Nelson.
Yes, its a spiritual issue, not a religious one....Its a beautiful and powerful thing to support each other's spirit, through some means with conscious intent.....be it via "prayer" or other conscious intent..such as music made with that in mind, giving charity in someone's name, all sorts of ways to do this for each other.in support of another's physical healing.
I send my hopes and prayers and songs out on behalf of all those in need of help
Devorah
Devorah,

You truly understand the power of love and spirit as expressed through music. The principle operates by universal law and being mindful of it is all we need to activate it and focus it in a particular direction. We have been blessed with the power to move the human spirit with our art and even our continued discussion of it is a positive force. Thank you again for starting it here.
thanks for being/doing it!
Devorah
