THE STRONG CARD

PITTSBURGH JAZZ

Roger Humphries

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

Pittsburgh Connection
I was born in Pittsburgh, PA. I went to Soho and Forbes Grade Schools and Fifth Ave. High School. I also went to Pittsburgh Univ. but left before graduation to go on the road with the Pittsburgh based 'oldies' show band, THE MEMORIES. I spent 20 years with that band. .
I lived on the lower hill district until I went in to the Army in 1965. But I "lived" on the hill district or what we called back then, 'THE SET'. I am based out of Wilkinsburg, PA.
Favorite Pittsburgh musicians/performers
I have many, many favorite musicians from 'the 'burg''. Too many to name here. A lot of those players were 'cats' who only got to play in those "hole n' the wall joints" . And they never got recorded or will never be known outside their neighborhoods.
But I will say that sax players like my brother Ron, Art Nance, the late great J.C. Gordon, StanleyTurrentine - Hammond B-3 player John Papi - guitar player Larry 'Butch' McGhee - vocalist like Hattie Taylor, members of the group:These Gents and the late Johnny Jack and Jerry Betters - and of course everyone from the group The Memories, inspired and encouraged me....and I apprecaite them all for that!......are my early favorites.
Favorite Jazz Radio or media station
WDUQ - 90.5fm
KJAZZ - 88.1fm AUDIO STREAM
Favorite Pittsburgh Jazz Venue
CJ's and the old Living Room. But none today are like my favorites of yesterday, like: Homewood's The Blue Falls - Ellens - The Loft, East Liberty's: The Tiger Tail and I can't rember the one down by Penn & Negley Ave.-run by Buck Brice - Shadyside's Encore and of course the numerous famous and not so famous places in the Hill District HIll District.
About Me:
I am a 61 year old sax player, mainly a tenor man but I've been known to pick up an alto, bari and flute if needed. And yes, I'll sing a tune or two, too. For over 40 years now, I've been performing and making Blues and 50's thru 60's R&B my "bread & butter" in the music industry. That is what helped me get my daughter thru medical school. I started out playing in The Hill City Marching Band back in 1959. I then migrated to the high school band and later found myself working weekend nights with a band called: 'Little' Willie Beck & The Crossfires.
By the time I got out of the Army I had learned to play a lot of genre's of music but none attracted me more then R&B.
I'm now retired from the post office and as I look back, I don't know how I managed to find the time or way to keep that job and still perform in rooms in Las Vegas, New Orleans, Atlantic City and points in between. I've met so many wonderful greats, near greats and wanna be greats. All of which have enriched my life. All of whom I learned something from and appreciate that I crossed their paths in my life.
I don't tour too often any more but I still keep busy working with a local 'oldies' group called: THE HOLIDAYS(www.holidayproductions.com). The orginial group had a few hits back in 1961. I also free lance with other bands, when time and desire permits.

For those you who might know yet know, but there was a passing of yet another local musican. I'm talking about the piano player, Lenny Glick. If any of you knew him or worked with him, I bet it would make his family and other friends who read any posting you might make on his Obituary…

Hello Jerry,

Sorry if I didn't respond to your kind words. I rarely check this site. It's great to run into the precious souls at CJ's Supper Club - (29th and Penn Ave.) every Thursday night. That's the great Roger Humphries RH Factor night (8:00 PM to Midnight). Some sit in later in the evening, but Roger and the quintet take care of the truest Jazz played in this city for the first couple of hours. I hope you come down and hunt me out. I'm usually at a table LISTENING ! You should know me... I'm the out of shape ugly guy who loves this music, so often I might be wiping a tear from my eyes. It's just that spiritual. Meanwhile, hope our paths cross again and sooner then later. Blessings and peace my friend.
