PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

WE have tp play music of the dead

I am mortified and no longer afraid of speaking my mind.WE are so stuck in a jazz loop, where the same peop-le play week after week etc. that we have to resort to "tribute bands". This is lack of creativity and laziness.

There is no support between people in the community, no new ideas. That;s why it fell apart. I am sorry for Tony, because he ws one off the nicer guys in jazz circles, but I dread what will happen.

Someone said to protest....aren't we a bit late???

I have never… Continue

The saga continues

I will be brief. Again, I am unpleasantly surprised by some attitudes of some musicians locally. In 40 years of playing, I NEVER was refused when I asked to sit in...this was when I asked Jack McDuff, and BB King among others and they had no problems!

In 3 weeks, I was refused here twice. I am not upset, i think it's kind of funny and it confirms my feelings that the scene here has changed.…

Standy Staley

I want to tell the organizers and everyone that attended Sandy;s memorial service tonite, that I am very sorry I could not attend.,.

I have been battling a stomach virus all weekend and today was the worst day. I wanted to spare all that attended my germs!!!!

I am,however very sad at the loss of a fantastic musician and great friend. Sandy was sure a pioneer for women in jazz and I thank her for that.

I know wherever she goes, she will carry on a legacy of truly… Continue

Manners

I received a response to an email i sent to someone that I regarded as a friend. i received an answer, but this person was very rude and condescending to me and i was quite upset. i know we all do things like that when there are other things happen in in our lives that may put us in a bad mood . I have been guilty of taking it out on someone. But I try not to do this. We are all in this for a common cause and iif someone wanted my help, I would help!! Geez, it's hard try to make a living as a… Continue

For the Greater Good

Not that I am a die-hard Oprah fan, but I did see a show where they talked about doing things for people less fortunate and that it lowered people's blood pressure and was good karma. So, in lieu of complaining which didn't do anything but give =me a b ad rep for...complaining....I decided to use my talents for the good of others, as well as my usual gigs and recording. I am going on the "Senior Citizen, Mentally Challenged Circuit. I will be performing every other Wednesday at a school for… Continue

Who makes te decisions?

I am so jazzed by the festival coming to fruition!!!! But I am also scared. I am left out of events...not because of my talent, but because some "person" deems themselves 'God for a Day" and never tells me.

Wat brought this to mind was te "Diva's of Jazz" gig. I see many missing names. WHO DECIDES WHO IS A DIVA AND WHO ISN'T?????????

WHY ARE THERE NOT "CASTING CALLS FOR ANY GIG HERE IN PGH? OR AT LEAST LET PEOPLE OTHER THAN ONE'S BFF'S KNOW ABOUT… Continue

Musicians Behaving Badly

I am always never a bandleader, but I had wasted my time rehearsing with some guys I thought were loyal., but had no indication they weren't.
I HAVE RUN INTO NOTHING BUT B.S. SINCE I CAME BACK. THE SCENE HAS TOTALLY CHANGED!
ANYONE THAT KNOWS ME KNOWS i AM GOOD AND I AM 54 AND REFUSE TO DO THIS GAME OF BLUES VS. JAZZ ETC. I HAVE 2 CD'S IN THE MAKING.....ONE WITH ME AS THE WHOLE BAND.
UNFORTUNATELY, ON A LIVE PERFORMANCE THIS DOESN'T WORK.

WHAT IS U[P?????? Really?
