PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

            INTERVIEW

       In Her Own Words
TO ALL MEMBERS:

Please try to visit your page a few minutes each week to "Accept" or "Decline" friend requests.  Each member is allowed to have up to 100 outstanding friend requests.  When you reach 100 active requests, the network will not allow you to add more friends until some of your requests are either accepted or declined.

When you fail to respond to a request, you are potentially blocking someone else from being asked.  As host of this network I would like to add every member as a friend also.  Presently, however, I have 147 unanswered friend requests which prevents me from adding anyone new.

My options are as follows:
1.`Ask  you to accept or decline my request by Wednesday if you are one of the 147.
2. Withdraw the request on Wednesday if it has not been answered to make room for someone else to be added.

The first step to learning how to use your page is to remember your password and visit your page occasionally.  If you forget your password, the netwrk will email you your password so there is no need to "Sign up" a second time (as some have done).  Just "Sign in" and then click the hypertect beneath that says "Forgot password?"

Feel free to browse around the network.  You cannot hurt anything by clicking and you just might find out how easy (read 'user friendly') the network really is.

If you try something and it doesn't work, please ask a question... don't give up.  You can ask any member who has done it successfully on their page or you can ask me.  That's why I am here.

Remember: Anything you post you can also delete or edit at any time.

By all means enjoy your experience on the network.  I will be adding new widgets or gadgets that you may find a value or just plain fun so keep checking in.

One last thing... we would like to reach at least 3000 members by December.  If everyone would recruit 2 members we would be there.  Please let your friends and associates know about us and how they can join you here.  This is NOT a network for artists only... it is for the entire community.  As artists we like to interact with students and fans and we want to be accessible also to potential employers.  What we have in common is our love for and interest in the music called "jazz," America's classical music and National Treasure.  This is our collective voice heard around the world.  In the words of the great prophet of our craft, Charlie Parker, "Now's the Time!"

Thank you for being a part of this new paradigm,

Nelson
