PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

The WORLD OPINION OF PITTSBUGH

You go, Bro!

Seems like these brothers from Pittsburgh can't be stopped these days!

Thanks for the hedzup on this new film.

Every conscious and positive statement that can be made about and for Haiti is much needed, as much for us as for our legacy to future generations.

(Just this week I caught up to the September, 2008, issue of National Geographic -- a special on where food comes from, which has a brief but heart-wrenching article about the… Continue

Memory of Mike Taylor [Poem by Michael Dennison]

MEMORY OF MIKE TAYLOR – A YEAR ROUND

[Poem by Michael Dennison]

A spring day, rain for the grass

puts the green on the table and evenings of late sun

and then the History Channel

time in a man’s life to ripen, to pass

as June crawls in with a birthday, stands up

like green corn on the stalk, fresh and wide open

to a good joke, the promise of a late show loaded with guests,

with irony gentle, universal as night

and June struts… Continue

Why music? Dec 18th 2008>

From The Economist print edition

Biologists are addressing one of humanity’s strangest attributes, its all-singing, all-dancing culture“IF MUSIC be the food of love, play on, give me excess of it.” And if not? Well, what exactly is it for? The production and consumption of music is a big part of… Continue

Techno futures.

Techno futures.

Many years ago, I had thought what an amazing thing technology was. It was ever moving always improving, and solving problems. My thoughts drifted to the next resting stop in entertainment. I wondered how they were going to get the media to us. Like Video killing the radio star. Computer killed the video star, even thought it is not dead yet, TV. is ,as we know it, heading out.. As a matter of facts, communication as we know it is out the window.

THE MUSICAL HILL

I lived in a second floor apartment at 2173 Webster Avenue. There, amidst all the goins' ons...The Perry Bar, on down to the Crawford Grill #2, shoot over to Center Avenue where there were flourishing businesses...as far as the eye could see...both ways...both sides; head on down past The Savoy Ballroom, The New Granada Theater, hustle on past the Roosevelt Theater, constantly weaving through an endless flow of moving people until I'd reach The Irene Kaufmann Settlement; turn left on Helman… Continue

Visionary New Afrikan Jazz Poetics from South Central Los Angeles Darrell Jónsson interviews Will Alexander and Ghasem Batamuntu

Astral choirs chime beneath furious yet prosaic percussion, while brass as soft as palm trees on the sea of a distant planet chants. Soon the surreal Sci-fi voice of Will Alexander, begins to encant his sophisticated language of dreams while the solar brass charts of Ghasem Batamuntu and the Nu Nova Compound's ensemble rips a hole in space. North American realms of New England, New France, Nova Scotia, New Spain have long ruled, now New Afrika has its place in the mix. That all this is beauty… Continue

Musicians to pay tribute to Turrentine brothers - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

By Bob Karlovits TRIBUNE-REVIEW Thursday, August 14, 2008 For Mike Tomaro and Marty Ashby, paying tribute to the jazz legacies of Stanley and Tommy Turrentine is as natural as having a picnic in the summer. It seems only appropriate they are doing it at a free, late afternoon concert in Highland Park. "Stanley was a huge influence on me," says saxophonist Tomaro, who also is an arranger and head of jazz studies at Duquesne University. "Matter of fact, anyone who plays this instrument owes… Continue

DWIGHT WHITE CROSSES THE VEIL

Dwight White Rest in Peace Tiny by maryrose on Jun 6, 2008 3:24 PM EDT Dwight White, a famed member of Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain, became the second member of the Curtain to pass away this year (Ernie Holmes). White died after complications of back surgery that he underwent a week ago. He was only 59-years old. I am proud that White signed my Helmet. He was underrated in my opinion. He earned two Pro Bowls and four career Super Bowl Rings. He is a member of the All-Time Steelers 75th… Continue

Musicians take social networking into their own hands

By Jennifer NetherbyFri Mar 28, 10:17 PM ET

50 Cent has more than 1 million friends on MySpace, but if the rapper ever decides to leave the social network, he'll be leaving behind those friends, too. So like a growing number of artists, he's started his own social networking site.

On Thisis50.com, fans can create profiles and friend lists just like on MySpace, but 50 Cent has direct access to the site's users and their e-mail addresses.
