PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

Benjy Myaz and friends - polished, soothing, inspiring

Basil Walters, Observer staff reporter

Wednesday, October 08, 2008

It certainly was not a night of "long story short", as Benjy Myaz called his last album released three years ago. On the contrary, with the help of friends singers A'Lisa, Charmaine Limonius and the Guyanese born saxophonist Courtney Fadlin, Myaz, the artiste, on Friday, gave the full length at the Red Bones Blues Café.

A singer, bass player and producer, Benjy delivered a most electic set covering a wide… Continue

Benjy Myaz' 'Werks' delight at RedBones

published: Wednesday | October 8, 2008

Mel Cooke, Gleaner Writer

At times Benjy Myaz relaxed on a high stool and led with his guitar, at other points he came front and centre and led with his voice, still with plucking the strings. Sometimes his voice stood on its own, at one point it alternated with special guest A'lisa, at others it gave way to Charmaine Limonius, just as he did with the guitar and saxophone of Courtney Fadlin.

In all cases the musician and singer, along with… Continue

WILL A (CULTURAL) CHANGE ACTUALLY COME?

A friend of mine posted this in another fourm and I thought it was perfect for this one as well... KA

According to the "experts", if the election were held today, Senator

Obama would win.

Many of those experts are suggesting that a "generational shift" is

occurring.

History has proven that when "generational shifts" occur, it means big

changes for the culture.

If we accept those three things as a fact for just a…

MAYOR LUKE RAVENSTAHL PROCLAIMS AUGUST 18 AS LEO CASINO DAY IN PITTSBURGH

Mayor Ravenstahl proclaims August 18 as Leo Casino day in Pittsburgh. As I received the proclamation I thought about my beginning in the burg, the struggle, the love and my DNA. From being tortured at the police station at the age of 18, beaten like a dog. To playing the Hurricane, just think me ,the son of a whore. I am honored....

My thoughts -

A few years back, I decided I had to end my life as a uneducated ignorant man. I placed education on the top of my list, something that I never did in my life. I noticed I was a dumb-ass country boy with everyone around me wise and far more educated. I was left out of many things and was laughed at more often then I liked. My Wife is a genius my sons Genius! I had to keep up or be left behind… I had volumes to say but was unable to do so, because I thought being educated was in a sense… Continue

Anywhere but the Burgh. Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten at the Keswick Theater, 8-19-08

Now...before you folks start going off on a tangent let's not get it twisted, ok? There is great music in Pittsburgh. Just not enough of it and the failure by some promoters and other folks to get some of these big tours. It's not just Jazz but across the board. It gives me a migrane trying to figure out folks here, but I do love my home.

There have been some great shows and great concepts this summer. Poggie Bell at Market Square, Dwayne Dolphin's CD release shows at not one but… Continue

Eric Kloss...why is he the forgotten man?

Folks....please read the following report I saw today. The similar circumstances have ocurred to Eric Kloss and from my last encounter with he and his wife Cindy he is not getting any better either. Why doesn't anyone believe them? Eric is also suffering from a rare nervous condition. Perhaps if some of you see this perhaps we can finally do something. No one deserves to live like this. Even though many folks have issues with his wife and her "controlling" nature it bothers me to know that they… Continue
