PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

RIP Randy

So sad to hear of the passing of Randy Purcell.
We all knew he was sick for a long time, but the news is still tragic.
We lost another legend today.
I guess Maynard was saving a seat in his band up there...

They have done it again...... Black Radio is Dead in Pittsburgh

Ron Davenport has sold WAMO A.M./F.M. and WPGR, there is now no Black Urban Radio in Pittsburgh, PA. Think about it, there is no broadcast media outlet for black expression, concern or news. We are now back to the future of the 1940's. What is your comment or concerns?

Soul Patrol Offer

Are you an indy Soul, Jazz, Funk, Blues, or Rock artist who is suffering during this economic depression? Do you have too few gigs, or too few sales (physical or digital)?

Hell you can't even get people to go to your website to sign up for your mailing list or to download a free song. Are you a Soul, Jazz, Funk, Blues, Rock artist on Myspace, Twitter, Facebook, etc and your fans still can't find you?

Are you an older artist and your fans can't find you online? Are you an… Continue

TO OUR PITTSBURGH MUSICAL BROTHERS AND SISTERS - PLEASE READ!!

We found this on our FaceBook page--it concerns the funding for arts that are in jeopardy in your great state. We're a Detroit/Chicago based band, but we are also going through similar problems in our states. The Detroit Jazz Fest, which in the last two years had 72 acts each in the last two years, are now down to only 33 acts for this years festival.

This is a link to a petition about arts in Pennsylvania:

MEMBERSHIP ISSUE REQUIRING IMMEDIATE ATTENTION

As we are approaching the 1200 member level, it has come to my attention that our recent practice of e-blasting current live local events has been both favorably and unfavorably received. Since this network is about values (personal, professional and artistic), I will try to address both the positive and negative feedback I have received thus far and invite any and all comments in response so that we can best learn how to serve the membership.… Continue

the Devil himself could never steal.

Did I ever tell you of my experience with an evil apparition, a specter, a demon, a ghost?

A many decades have gone by, yet it is as if it happened the night before last.

A young son I was, no more then ten. Such a strong child I was, fearful of nothing, as long as I was by my mother’s hand.

We lived in the country, on a road all by ourselves.

Vacant of life, void of expression.

Nothing to watch from my crooked porch, but for the Osage posts disappearing into the… Continue

Don't worry about the naysayers and those who try to put you down.....Do what you do best

And actually folks that is a blunt as I can make it without naming names. Many musicians and fans ALWAYS come to me to complain about who did what to them, the lack of respect of them , the lack of gigs for them, the absence of people at the gig, why we don't see certain artists come to town, seeing the same old faces playing around, no music in a certain part of town, etc, etc, and double etc.

Aren't you surprised I haven't lost my mind after all these years?

Well...I… Continue
