PITTSBURGH JAZZ

From Blakey to Brown, Como to Costa, Eckstine to Eldridge, Galbraith to Garner, Harris to Hines, Horne to Hyman, Jamal to Jefferson, Kelly to Klook; Mancini to Marmarosa, May to Mitchell, Negri to Nestico, Parlan to Ponder, Reed to Ruther, Strayhorn to Sullivan, Turk to Turrentine, Wade to Williams… the forthcoming publication Treasury of Pittsburgh Jazz Connections by Dr. Nelson Harrison and Dr. Ralph Proctor, Jr. will document the legacy of one of the world’s greatest jazz capitals.

Do you want to know who Dizzy Gillespie  idolized? Did you ever wonder who inspired Kenny Clarke and Art Blakey? Who was the pianist that mentored Monk, Bud Powell, Tad Dameron, Elmo Hope, Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme? Who was Art Tatum’s idol and Nat Cole’s mentor? What musical quartet pioneered the concept adopted later by the Modern Jazz Quartet? Were you ever curious to know who taught saxophone to Stanley Turrentine or who taught piano to Ahmad Jamal? What community music school trained Robert McFerrin, Sr. for his history-making debut with the Metropolitan Opera? What virtually unknown pianist was a significant influence on young John Coltrane, Shirley Scott, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant when he moved to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh in the 1940s?  Would you be surprised to know that Erroll Garner attended classes at the Julliard School of Music in New York and was at the top of his class in writing and arranging proficiency?

Some answers  can be gleaned from the postings on the Pittsburgh Jazz Network.

For almost 100 years the Pittsburgh region has been a metacenter of jazz originality that is second to no other in the history of jazz.  One of the best kept secrets in jazz folklore, the Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy has heretofore remained mythical.  We have dubbed it “the greatest story never told” since it has not been represented in writing before now in such a way as to be accessible to anyone seeking to know more about it.  When it was happening, little did we know how priceless the memories would become when the times were gone.

Today jazz is still king in Pittsburgh, with events, performances and activities happening all the time. The Pittsburgh Jazz Network is dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the places, artists and fans that carry on the legacy of Pittsburgh's jazz heritage.

WELCOME!

Dear Friends:

There is a Zen koan which asks; "how do you step forward from atop a 100 foot pole?".  This koan always makes me think about jazz and particularly my beloved teacher Harry Whitaker.  Harry never prepared for a gig - didn't pass out charts with complex arrangements.  He always hired a group that he knew could empathize with him directly - mind to mind.   He'd click his…

Some Songs Are Meant To Touch Peoples Hearts @ganstamarcus

Duke Ellington celebrates 119!

"In 1934, in Pittsburgh, I heard and saw the Ellington band perform for my first time.  Nothing, before or since has affected my life so much. In 1939, I became his protégé, enabling me to be closer and see more.

His first, last and only formal instruction for me was embodied in one word: observe. I did just that, and came to know one of the most fascinating and original minds in American music.

International Jazz Education Leader Dr. Nathan Davis Passes

Dr. Nathan Davis, 81, leaves a legacy of establishing a curriculum-based jazz studies program at a major university. He founded the Pitt Jazz Studies Program in 1969, when only two others existed in this country—one at Howard University established by Donald Byrd and the program at Indiana University at Bloomington set up by David Baker.

Enjoy A Wonderful Lawn With Your Few Tips

It's that time of year when gardens and CSAs in the DC area are using a bumper crop of basil. This strong, aromatic herb can be dried and stored, but is best converted into a pesto marinade. The sauce can be eaten with pasta, mixed with mayonnaise for virtually any flavorful spread or dripped over tomatoes for a yummy summer salad. If you have an a lot of open basil leaves and would like to make a diverse quantity of pesto for storage, ensure to seal in airtight container and freeze for no…

Jazz Appreciation

The neo-Hot Club movement is dedicated to promoting Jazz listening and appreciation through group listening, via the 78 rpm format (think book club concept). Recently, I attended a meeting in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, curated by young Matthew Rivera, a senior at Columbia University. His topic was the music of Pittsburgh great, Earl Hines. The audience was young (SURPRISE!), and exhibited an enthusiasm and understanding that music is not old or new, but in the present.  Louis Armstrong's 1928…
