I'm sure it is not much different in Pittsburgh, but I, like many others, have been recently laid off. Now I don't mean to be political, but think about what you would do if you lost your
Medical insurance today at the whim of your employer. This is why we should all pay attention to the debate in Washington. Oh well, now that I have some free time I will be making a longer visit to Pittsburgh this fall to spend time with family and hit a few clubs. It…

Is Jazz Dying?
By TERRY TEACHOUT
New York
In 1987, Congress passed a joint resolution declaring jazz to be “a rare and valuable national treasure.” Nowadays the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis is taught in public schools, heard on TV commercials and performed at prestigious venues such as New York’s Lincoln Center, which even runs its own nightclub, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.
Here’s…

Radio Free America
By NANCY SINATRA
Los Angeles
WHEN I hear great American standards on the radio, I think of all the songwriters, artists and musicians whom my father, brother and I have worked with over the years. It reminds me that every recording has two parts, the composition and the performance. It also reminds me how many wonderful artists and musicians have not been paid fairly for their work.
Songwriters and publishers are…

The Pittsburgh Jazz Network continues to be flooded with folks who are not talking about Jazz at all and have no interest in it. Only here to promote their business ventures. This goes for a few more of you. Why???
They instead flood us with tourist ads and religious views. Why is that Nelson? Can't you block that out?

Hot warm muggy heat of summer comes to bear down in great steamy waves..... weeks pass and I don't want to sit at a computer in a city connected to electricity and synaptic emphatic digital impulses promising the world of the great things to come if you would just keep reading the emails , checking the my spacebook invites, and following the tweets to the promised land..... I don't want to insist that you hear my new songs or rather, I want you to discover them organically like presents thrown…

'Nova: Musical Minds'
By MIKE HALE
“Musical Minds,” the season premiere of “Nova” on PBS, is based on the neurologist Oliver Sacks’s most recent book, “Musicophilia,” a collection of case studies of people whose brains have unusual relationships to music, cases in which, as Dr. Sacks puts it, “music gets them going to an extraordinary degree.” A one-hour program can’t approach the depth and texture of…

Drummer Michael Carvin says there is no real mystery about why so many great drummers have come from Pittsburgh.
He looks at a hard-working city, where success is never guaranteed, and says that simply creates an attitude that demands a high level of effort.
"It wasn't that the city produced great drummers," he says. "Rather, they were simply great people who played drums."
Carvin, who runs the Michael Carvin School of Drumming in New York City, will be here… Continue
